Cholla tree

Being in Arizona the first time was my first time seeing a cactus on the North American continent. Obviously I have seen trees before. But this is the first time in my life seeing a cactus tree.

The cholla (pronounced choya) is a cactus that grows across the southwestern United States. There are 20 types of them and their stems provide the plant with water storage, photosynthesis and flower production. Some grow at a very low level, others as trees. More information on this amazing creation can be found on Desert USA, google the name and research to learn more about the plants in the desert.

Beautiful as they are, the fact they grow high and sometimes at face level can make them very threatening to migrants, especially since most travel the terrain at night, while moving very quickly.
